Focus on the Question

For those who are practicing the Focus on the Question activities, here is one that can be used 5 minutes a day.

Module 5 Focus on the Question

Target 10 - A Fundamentals Game

5.NBT.7
Module 5
Differentiation Activity/Fundamentals Game

Students take turns rolling a dice and determining if they would like to add that number as a tenth or a one.  They will keep a running total and add either a tenth or one with each roll.  Players must play all eight rounds.  The player closest to ten after 8 rounds is the winner.

Target 10 Game and Directions

Adding Decimal Fractions with Regrouping

5.NBT.7
Module 5
Differentiation Activity

Student can use the mix-and-match cards from the Number Case to add decimals.  The activity can be extended by trying to find two cards that will make a total that is as close to either any whole number or a designated whole number.

Adding Decimal Fractions

5.NBT.7
Module 5
Differentiation Activity

Students will create decimal fractions with a whole number and a decimal to the hundredths.  They will then add the two decimals together using place value or a number line.

Rounding Decimal Fractions

5.NBT.3&3b
Module 3
Differentiation Activity

This is a game for 3+ players.  Student use cards 0-9 to make  a decimal fraction with a whole number and numbers to the thousandths.  They put them in order from least to greatest.  Whoever made the greatest decimal will receive 4 points and the next will receive 2 points.  The student with the most points after 5 rounds is the winner.

Decimal Thousandths

Rounding Thousandths

5.NBT.4
Module 3
Differentiation Activity

Students use the 0-9 cards to draw and create a number with one whole number and a decimal to the thousandths.  The student with a number closest to a whole number receives a point.  The student with the most points after 5 rounds is the winner.

Comparing and Ordering Decimals

5.NBT.3&3b
Module 3
Differentiation Activity

This is a game for 3+ players.  Student use cards 0-9 to make  a decimal number in the thousandths.  They put them in order from greatest to least.  Whoever made the greatest decimal will receive 4 points and the next will receive 2 points.  The student with the most points after 5 rounds is the winner.

Comparing Thousandths

5.NBT.3 &3b
Module 5  Lesson 1
Differentiation Activities

Students draw 3 cards and create the greatest decimal that they can.  Cards are returned to the pile after each student draws.  The student with the greatest decimal receives a point.  The student with the most points after 5 rounds is the winner.

Perfect Pairs - Order of Operation

5.OA.1   5.OA.2
Module 1
Differentiation Activity
Fundamentals Game

Students draw cards from three different piles. They then find the product of all three numerals and mark that corresponding space on the game board.  The student who can claim three spaces in a row is the winner.   Full directions, cards, and game board below.

Perfect Pairs

Adding Unrelated Mixed Numbers

5.NF.1
Module 6
Differentiation Activity

Students roll a standard dice and draw a card to make a mixed number.  Students add the mixed numbers together.  If the total is over 5, the students score 1 point.  If the total is over 8, they score 2 points.  The student with the most points after 5 rounds is the winner.

Improper Fractions and Mixed Number Equivalents

5.NF.1
Module 4

Student can use the cards to play memory or other mix and match games.  They can also use the cards to add and subtraction fractions.

Adding Like Denominators on a Number Line

5.NF.1
Module 6
Differentiation

Students roll 1 dice and make it into sixths.  So if they roll a 2, it is 2/6 (two sixths).  They then mark it on a number line and roll again.  They add the second fraction onto the first one using the number line.  They need to also write it as an equation.  Student 2 will do the same.  The student with the larger total wins a point for the round.  After 5 rounds, the student with the most points is the winner.

Over/Under: Adding Unlike Denominators Game

5.NF.1
Module 6
Fractions Over/Under

Students will draw a card from each pile and add them together.  Students will receive one point for having to change one denominator or two points for having to change both.  Then they will receive an additional point if the total is less than two or two additional points if the total is more than two.  The student with the most points after 5 rounds is the winner.  Full directions and cards are in the the downloadable resource links below.
